A Love for Old Stuff

So, here we are.  I've been wanting to write for some time now, but it seems that time never allows for sitting and writing.  Yet, it always calls to me, so I have a few minutes today and thought, "What the heck...type a few lines...see how it goes."

So, here we are.  I thought I'd start our first post on our blog by writing about something that I absolutely love...old scrapbooks!  I have several that I have kept that are my own, and we have several featured in our vintage shop .  I love the thought that someone was so interested in something of their time that they put together a scrapbook piece by piece.  Sadly, because there is so much old paper / ephemera out there, that much of it gets overlooked and doesn't seem as important to people.  Maybe, too, people just don't know what to do with it.

We recently moved, so I will now have to find new places for some of my treasures, but I generally keep my scrapbooks on a shelf in our book area where they can be looked at and enjoyed.  Other of my smaller ephemera items are set about the house in carefully selected areas.  For example, there are several old presidential postcards that I arrange in my antique hutch that has glass sides, so people can see both sides of the postcards depending upon if they are looking in from the side or the front of the hutch.  I have other postcards that sit in a pretty plate by some maps and souvenir type items.  Makes for a nice display.

We recently went to an auction where we found a George Washington scrapbook that was written by a student in 1932.  It appears he took so much time putting it together - even including his writing.  Interestingly, students today might very well write reports about George Washington, but would they look anything like this one?  Most likely not.  Today there would be PowerPoint presentations, other types of slideshows, reports printed out on fancy paper with color pictures and writing.  Makes these old scrapbooks all that more special.

The scrapbook that I had the hardest time parting with was a Mt. Saint Helens Scrapbook.  It is amazing!  The person who put it together included newspaper clippings from when scientists first started watching Mt. Saint Helens prior to its May 1980 eruption. It is just packed full.  A great piece of history.

One of my passions is dogs!! We had dogs when I was growing up.  I've had the joy and privilege of living with several different dogs throughout my adult life (and still miss them).  So, I have lots of old dog books and a few scrapbooks.  We found a scrapbook that also included some rodeo and western types of materials including Gene Autry and Jim the trick ox, as well as dogs!  That one is listed so hopefully someone will enjoy it.
Dogs, dogs and more dogs!!

Paper!  Love it!  Records of our past.  There will always be room in my collections and in our shop for these treasures!
